A Message From Principal Wilson:

Parents/Guardians,

Please note that finals will be starting this week here at Benson.  It is imperative that your kids get plenty of rest the night before their final and that they arrive to their final here at school on time.  Please be sure to reiterate this message to your kids before the start of final exams which will begin on Wednesday January 22nd.

 

Parents please take a look at the documentary “The Heart Of The Matter” which is a program that is in place here at Benson Tech.  Linda McLellan, Katie Meyer, Monty Catabay and Amy Barras are the important figures behind this very successful program happening here at Benson Tech.

Parents please note that Benson will not be having a late opening this coming Wednesday January 22nd as we had our late opening last week.  Benson will be on its Finals schedule starting this coming Wednesday thru Friday.

A Message from Mary Rechner in regards to the “Writers In The schools Program” that Benson students participated in on Thursday January 9th

Dear Writers, Teachers, and Principal Wilson,

Thank you very much for an expressive and exciting reading at Broadway Books last Thursday evening to celebrate the residencies of writers Desmond Spann and Timothy Lane.

Thank you to Mr. Naganuma and Ms. Bruer for hosting our writers, to Mr. Mylet for being our WITS liaison, and to Mr. Wilson for inviting Writers in the Schools to work with Benson teachers and students.

Benson Tech Show:

The Benson Tech Show is coming February 13th and 14th from 6pm-9pm here at Benson.  Parents/Guardians this is the time to come by with your students to see what Benson truly has to offer within its CTE programs.  Parents and students will be able to visit all the CTE programs, talk with teachers in the academic and CTE setting and experience Benson’s hands on programs.  The freshmen class will also have activities happening  in the gym for all of our students and guests.  To catch a glimpse of last year’s Tech Show please be sure to visit the Benson website at www.bensonhs.net and click on the Tech Show 2013 icon.

Athletic News:

Congratulations goes out to Vonte Carter on being nominated for the 37th Annual McDonalds All American Boys Basketball Game.  This nomination means that Vonte Carter is recognized as one of the top 1000 basketball players in the United States and from the field of 1000 basketball players 24 athletes will be chosen to participate in the McDonalds All American Boys Basketball Game in April.  Benson congratulates Vonte Carter on his nomination and we wish him luck in making it to the field of 24.

 

 

A Message from Rachel Draper (Athletic Director):

Spring sports clearance is February 18-28 during lunch and after school.

Spring sports tryouts/practice starts March 3.

All athletes must get cleared in the athletic office before they can tryout or practice.

Winter Formal 2014

Benson’s Winter Formal will be held on Saturday, February 1st at the Doubletree Inn by the Lloyd Center.  This dance is FORMAL.  Please be sure to “Dress to Impress.” 

Winter Formal tickets will be on sale January 21st – 31st during lunch and afterschool in the bookkeeper’s office.  Prices:  $20 single, $35 couple.  Tickets are limited so by them now!

 

Benson’s Talent Show:

Benson’s Talent Show will be held on Friday, February 7th from 6:00 – 7:30 in the Auditorium.  Price is $2.00 at the door.  Students may purchase their tickets in advance for $1.00.

 

 

A message from the Benson Counseling Staff of Amy Henry and Steve Wren:

Parents here are a few things we want to make sure you don’t miss:

 

Evening Scholars: If your student needs to make up credit please have them see their counselor for more information about retrieving credit through the EVENING SCHOLARS program located at Benson.  The last day to get the paperwork from your counselor is Feb. 4th 2014. 

 

Math Tutoring: The counseling center is now offering FREE math tutoring on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm for students in Algebra 1 – Pre-Calculus.  Feel free to drop in any Thursday and get help with math in the counseling center.

Summer Opportunities For Your Kids:

PLACE (Planning and Leadership Across City Environments):  By signing up for PLACE you will work on real projects that directly involves you in planning Portland’s future.  During this dynamic, interdisciplinary, and experiential summer program, you will learn from the city’s best minds as they grapple with decisions that shape Portland’s Future.  Sign up in the Career Center.

 

International Summer Science Institute: Applicants to the international Summer Science Institute must have excelled in their science studies and demonstrated their interceded in scientific research beyond the classroom—in extra research projects, science competitions, summer programs, etc.  Pick-up applications in the Career Center.

 

Leadership Conference:

The César E. Chávez Leadership Conference will take place on March 7, 2014, at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon.  Benson’s Latino/a students are encouraged to apply for this event.

Space is limited.  If you are interesting in attending, you will need to complete the following steps:

1) Pick up forms (field trip permission and excused absence) from Brian Stauffer in the main office or Ms. Henry in the counseling office

2) Get parent/teacher signatures

3) Pay the $10 registration fee to Debbie Corning in the Bookkeeping office

4) Turn in forms and receipt from bookkeeper to Brian in the main office.

5) The first 30 students to get their forms and receipts in will be able to attend the conference.

 

Everything is due THURSDAY, JANUARY 23RD!

Contest Opportunities To Discuss With Your Kids:

DuPont Challenge– The DuPont Challenge offers winning students, sponsoring teachers, and parents more than 100,000 in awards, including an expenses-paid trip to a Walt Disney World Resort and VIP tour and luncheon at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.  The DuPont Challenge is an essay competition for grades 7-12 that focuses on scientific and technological developments that create solutions to humanity’s most pressing global challenges.

65th Annual Be Kind to Animals Poster & Story Contest– Each year students in Oregon are invited to either create a poster or write a short story portraying a part of the Oregon Humane Society’s mission to help animals.  Winning posters and stories are displayed in the OHS Education Hall, on the OHS website and are featured in the OHS quarterly magazine. Posters and stories may also be used to promote events and shelter programs. Top entries in each category will also win great prizes.
