Site Council Meeting Minutes
Date: January 19th 2016
Time: 3:30pm-4:30pm
Where: BHS Library Classroom
In attendance/Introductions:
Dale Bajema (Site Council Chair), Paul Anthony (School Board Member), Brett Anderson (Benson Instructor), Cynthia Aguilar (BHS Student), Yessica Martinez Mulet (BHS Student), Simon Criswell (BHS Student), Candice Vickers (District Employee), Barry Phillips (Vice Principal), Curtis Wilson Jr. (Principal), Carol Criswell (Parent), Heather Taylor (Alumni) and Jeandre Carbone (Vice Principal)
School Climate Team:
Mr. Philips spent time talking about the School Climate team and how it will be used here at Benson Tech. There will be a link to a school survey for family, staff and students that will need to be filled out. Mr. Phillips asked for clarity from the Site Council team regarding the survey before it goes public to the students, staff and parents of the Benson community. The Site Council team spent some time going over and revamping the survey.
2016-17 and 2017-18 Student Enrollment and Implications for Curriculum
Mr. Wilson spoke on this issue and talked about the number of students that will be coming to Benson during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school year. Mr. Wilson indicated that a proposal was presented to the school board by Mr. Wilson and district officials outlining the proposed student populations for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years. Mr. Wilson discussed having 300 students in the freshman class for the upcoming 2016-17 school year and having that number increase to 365 freshman students for the 2017-18 school year. Based on the capacity of the building and the funding available these were the numbers that the district and Mr. Wilson felt reasonable that could be maintained here at Benson over the next two years.
Benson Master Planning:
Mr. Wilson discussed the Master Planning process and the fact that the first initial Master Planning meeting with district officials and Benson staff will probably take place on Wednesday January 28th here at Benson Tech from 6pm-8pm in the band room. Master Planning begins the process of looking at the vision of Benson Teach and how the district and Benson supporters view how this remodel of Benson will begin to look like in the near future.
Benson August Community Picnic
There was a discussion about choosing the date for the annual Benson Community Picnic. Principal Wilson, Dale Bajema and Rob Johns will meet on a separate date later in the week in order to look at viable dates for the Community picnic. Dale also discussed having an all class reunion separate from the August Community Picnic. This all class picnic could happen sometime around the Grand Floral towards the end of the school year. This information will be brought back to the Site Council team at next month’s meeting.
Update on Centennial Planning
This information will come from Tammy Hite who was not in attendance at this meeting.
Action Plan
Dale would like for the Site Council Team to take a look at the Action Plan document for the month of February and March and see if there is anything that we may need to discuss at next month’s Site Council meeting.
What is the role of Site Council?
Mr. Wilson gave a definition of the role of Site Council and its purpose here at Benson Tech. This is to give clarity to individuals who may be thinking about joining the Site Council team in the near future.
What is the role of the Benson Site Council Team? The school site council plays an important role in decision-making at Benson Polytechnic. The school site council is a group of teachers, parents, classified employees, alumni, and students that work with the principal and his/her administration to develop, review and evaluate school improvement programs, safety protocols, parent engagement opportunities and overall goals of the school for the current school year and beyond. The school site council also looks at how to best serve the whole school and how to best move policy and guidelines along that affect the school holistically in collaboration with the school principal.
Benson’s Site Council team meets the third Tuesday of every month and will be meeting from 3:30pm-5:00pm
The Next Benson Site Council Meeting will be Tuesday February 16th from 3:30pm-5:00pm in the Benson Library Classroom.

Master Planning Committee “Reshaping Benson’s Future”
If you are interested in being on the Benson Master Planning Committee for the “New Benson Tech” please read the information below, open up the attached links and follow the application instructions. This is a great way to get involved and stay on top of all the upcoming news and decisions related to the “New Benson Tech.”
The Benson master planning website is now available for people in the community who are interested in becoming involved. This site provides an overview of the upcoming Master Planning process, an application for joining the Master Planning committee and the committee charter. Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering(ASE) Information sessions are coming to Benson and are open to all families and students in the community. Information sessions are a chance for ASE staff and alumni to instruct students and families about how to apply to the program and answer their questions.
- Benson Polytechnic High School – Thursday, December 3rd at 2:00 in the Auditorium
What are the benefits of an ASE internship?
1. 296+ hours of pre-professional experience with a scientist, engineer or computer scientist
2. 2 conferences that build your science career knowledge and network
3. High school credit where applicable
4. All students receive a stipend of $1,000 paid in two or three increments during the summer

Students who attend this event will learn from professionals about the many different jobs within the construction field, as well as, the work involved in bidding, estimating, building-information modeling and project management.
Kaiser Permanente (Sunnyside Medical Center) Career Day December 10th 9:30-12:30
Students who attend this career day will tour and talk with professionals in the field. They will hear about the skills and education needed for various jobs within health care (including IT and other high demand, well-paying jobs that don’t involve direct patient care.
PACE (Plumbing, Air, Carpentry, and Electrical) Mentorship Program:
PACE is a FREE after-school mentorship program that gives you the opportunity to work with plumbers, sheet metal workers, carpenters and electricians to learn about well-paying jobs in the trades.
OSU Field Trip 12/5/2015
Students who attend this field trip will learn about the School of Business. Transportation is provided, as well as, breakfast and lunch.

A Message from Joe Rozewski (Benson’s Art Instructor)
A big “Thank You” for those who showed up for the Arts Fundraiser at Dots cafe last Saturday. It is estimated that we raised close to $400 for our art students. The sculpture studio is becoming better every year and is growing into a more functional 3-D space every year.
On Thursday, December 17th at 4PM we will have another Benson Arts event here at the school. KBPS has partnered up with the Visual arts department and graciously allowed us use of their lobby. The reception for our artists starts at 4PM and runs till 7PM. High end art as well as holiday gifts for sale will be sold by the Creative Arts Club and the artists themselves. Come out and support our students and all the hard work they have done with their art work at the KBPS studio, 515 15th Ave, at the school. Go Benson Artists!!!

BENSON YEARBOOKS FOR SALE! Recently we had to clean out a few storage areas around the school and discovered A LOT of yearbooks. The majority of the books are from 1970 to 2014 with few books from the 50’s and 60’s. Most are brand new, but some of the older books have a bit of wear and some writing in them. If you are interested in purchasing one, please go to the Benson Alumni website to see what books are available and prices. Proceeds from the sale go towards the Benson Centennial Celebrations happening during the 2016-2017 school year. Please allow up to 4-weeks for delivery.

When Your Student is Absent or Late
When a student is absent from a class period, an Auto-Dialer will call a designated phone number associated with the student to inform parents/guardians of the absence.
In previous years, after listening to the Auto-Dialer message, parent/guardians were able to push a button to leave a recorded message for the Attendance Monitor. This is no longer possible. However, voicemail messages MAY BE LEFT for the Attendance Monitor, at any time, by calling Benson High School at (503) 916-5100 and then pressing Option 3 for Attendance. This is what the new Auto-Dialer system directs parent/guardians to do, in order to excuse or comment on their student’s absence from class.

A Message from Julie Morris (Benson’s Librarian)
The Children’s Book Harvest is finished for the year and Benson collected 840 books! Our goal was 500 books and with the help of several dedicated parents, and especially Chelsea King, we surpassed it. A BIG thank you to all who donated and to the students of the Benson Key Club who counted and packed the books before they were delivered to the Children’s Book Bank.
Now that the books are “harvested”, the Children’s Book Bank is looking for volunteers from the community to help clean and organize the books for distribution. On December 17th, 2015, from 4-7PM, the Art classes at Benson will be having our first art Gallery Show. Featuring work from the Visual arts Department in Benson’s KBPS’s radio station’s lobby. Most work is for sale at a great price. The Creative Arts Club will be there selling lots of Winter Break gifts at “recession proof” prices. Come out and see the great work made by our students and maybe pick up a gift for a friend for the holidays. All sales go to the Visual Arts Department account, checks and cash only please.

There will be a “Brunch For the Arts” at Dots Cafe Saturday November 21st. Students, staff and parents can buy vouchers from Mr. Rozewski or just show up at the brunch and a portion of that day’s profits goes to Benson H.S. art classes.
Dots cafe is family friendly and located at: 2521 SE Clinton St. @ 26th Ave. Brunch starts at 10 AM and includes bacon, eggs, toast, coffee, pancakes and much more, all for $10! The manager has been very helpful in the past and helped us raise money for the Kiln two years ago. So come on down and support Benson’s Arts!

8th Grade Parent Info Night
Parents if know of families who are interested in attending Benson next year please invite them to our 8th Grade Parent Info Night which will be taking place on Tuesday Nov. 17th from 6pm-8pm. We will start with brief introductions and a overview of the school at 6pm in the Benson auditorium and then head off for tours of the school at 6:15pm. All interested parents and students who are interested in Benson Tech for the 2016-17 school year are invited to this event.

My name is Roselia Ekhause. I work for AmeriCorps as a College Access Corps Coordinator for the LÁMP:ARA program here at Benson. This program aims to improve the academic performance, retention, and graduation rates of active Benson student program participants (Tutoring, mentoring, school skills training, Career & College information). Do you have children’s books in your home that are no longer being read?
The Benson Library and some student leadership volunteers are hoping to collect 500 books by November 13th, which will be given to children in need. The books will be cleaned and mended if necessary before being distributed. So, even if a book has been well-loved, please donate it anyway for another child to enjoy. Drop off your donations of new and used children’s books in the donation boxes around campus or in the Benson Library.
The Children’s Book Bank, (www.childrensbookbank.org), provides children of all ages with quality books to build home libraries, so that children can learn and grow. The Children’s Book Bank is proud to support PPS Head Start and Carole Smith’s PPS Read Together initiative.

A Message from Tammy Hite (Benson’s Architecture and Drafting Instructor)
How would you celebrate your 100th birthday? That is a question we are asking here at Benson Tech. During the 2016-2017 school year, Benson will be celebrating their Centennial Anniversary. This is not just an event to celebrate with the current staff and student body, but with all alumni and former faculty so there is a lot of planning and preparation to do in the next 10-months.
The first official meeting of the Benson Tech Centennial Committee has been schedule for Tuesday, November 10th in the library classroom at Benson. There will be meeting for Benson students and staff from 3:30 to 4:30 and then another meeting from 5:00 to 6:00 for alumni and parents who cannot make the earlier meeting.
Benson Tech is one of oldest career and technical high schools in the nation and that is worth celebrating.

The University of Oregon in collaboration with Portland Public Schools, Self Enhancement Inc. and the Black United Fund of Oregon invite ALL black and African American students and their families to the BLACKReach Opportunities program on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at Self Enhancement Inc. This is a great opportunity for students to get answers to their questions about the transition process into higher education after high school, learn about financial aid and scholarships opportunities to pay for college, important deadlines and all college related questions. Parents also have the unique opportunity to learn how to support their students to pursue higher education. Younger students will have an opportunity to learn what it takes to prepare for college and interact with college students from similar backgrounds. Free dinner and childcare are provided so the entire family can attend. Career Day Opportunities
Mercy Corp Career Day November 18th 9:00-2:00
Mercy Corp is an international humanitarian aid organization based in Portland. It specializes in community-based development projects in more than 40 countries. Students who attend this career day will learn about careers in international development for long-term solutions to poverty.
Howard S. Wright Career Day December 9th 9:00-1:30
One of Portland’s leading construction companies specializing in commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. Students who attend this event will learn from professionals about the many different jobs within the construction field, as well as, the work involved in bidding, estimating, building-information modeling and project management.
Kaiser Permanente (Sunnyside Medical Center) Career Day December 10th 9:30-12:30
Students who attend this career day will tour and talk with professionals in the field. They will hear about the skills and education needed for various jobs within health care (including IT and other high demand, well-paying jobs that don’t involve direct patient care.
ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentorship Applications are due November 24th
Students will get mentoring & career advice from professionals, design a building project from start to finish, and connect what you learn in school to real life careers.
PACE (Plumbing, Air, Carpentry, and Electrical) Mentorship Program:
PACE is a FREE after-school mentorship program that gives you the opportunity to work with plumbers, sheet metal workers, carpenters and electricians to learn about well-paying jobs in the trades.

Students who attend this field trip will learn about the School of Business. Transportation is provided, as well as, breakfast and lunch.

To receive text notifications, you must opt in to the service. You opt in by texting YES to 68453. Parents and students should confirm their cell numbers are listed in the student information system. A Couple of Message’s from Joe Rozewski (Benson’s Art Instructor)
There will be a very important fundraiser for Benson’s Visual Arts Department on Saturday November 21st at Dots Cafe on 26th Ave. and SE Clinton street. Come in For Brunch, 10AM-2PM. Dots is giving us a percentage of all funds made that morning to go straight into our art department funding, for materials and tools for the students. Please come out and have a nice brunch with us and help out the students at the same time. Tickets can also be purchased through Mr. Rozewski, the book keeper or at the door.
On December 17th, 2015, from 4-7PM, the Art classes at Benson will be having our first art Gallery Show. Featuring work from the Visual arts Department in Benson’s KBPS’s radio station’s lobby. Most work is for sale at a great price. The Creative Arts Club will be there selling lots of Winter Break gifts at “recession proof” prices. Come out and see the great work made by our students and maybe pick up a gift for a friend for the holidays. All sales go to the Visual Arts Department account, checks and cash only please.

- The University of Oregon will be here on the 19th of November to host their annual Duck Express day at Benson. This day provides all seniors who have applied or interested in applying to the U of O an opportunity to have an 1 on 1 with their admissions counselor. This event will be held in the Benson’s counseling center from 1:30 – 3:30pm.

BENSON YEARBOOKS FOR SALE! Recently we had to clean out a few storage areas around the school and discovered A LOT of yearbooks. The majority of the books are from 1970 to 2014 with few books from the 50’s and 60’s. Most are brand new, but some of the older books have a bit of wear and some writing in them. If you are interested in purchasing one, please go to the Benson Alumni website to see what books are available and prices. Proceeds from the sale go towards the Benson Centennial Celebrations happening during the 2016-2017 school year. Please allow up to 4-weeks for delivery.

When Your Student is Absent or Late
When a student is absent from a class period, an Auto-Dialer will call a designated phone number associated with the student to inform parents/guardians of the absence.
In previous years, after listening to the Auto-Dialer message, parent/guardians were able to push a button to leave a recorded message for the Attendance Monitor. This is no longer possible. However, voicemail messages MAY BE LEFT for the Attendance Monitor, at any time, by calling Benson High School at (503) 916-5100 and then pressing Option 3 for Attendance. This is what the new Auto-Dialer system directs parent/guardians to do, in order to excuse or comment on their student’s absence from class.
Dress Code Reminder
Dress Code Reminder: Please me mindful that clothing with inappropriate symbols or signs relating to gangs, drugs, tobacco, alcohol or anything else is not acceptable. No sunglasses, du-rags, bandanas, sagging pants, halter tops, exposed midriffs, low necklines, spaghetti straps, or holes and tears in clothing. No bare feet, spike jewelry, hanging belts and chains. Dresses and skirts, with arms at your side; need to be at the end of your fingertips in length. Skorts and shorts need to have a 4 inch inseam.
