A Message From Principal Wilson:

Parents/Guardians,

 

 

• Parents if you could help spread the word that Benson will be having is 2^nd annual Freshmen Picnic here at Benson Tech out on the front lawn on June 2^nd 2015 from 6pm-8pm to welcome in our incoming Freshman class to Benson Tech.  This will give an opportunity for our students, staff and supporters of Benson Tech a chance to meet and greet our incoming Freshman class and their family members.  There will be food, music, games, gifts and a positive atmosphere in store for our next class of Benson Techsters. 

Please join us if you can and come out and support the incoming class of 2019.

 

• Parents please note that I’ve attached two photos of Benson’s float that was a part of Saturday’s Starlight Parade.  A huge “Thanks” goes out to all the Benson student participants and especially Harrison Brown, Kevin Flink, Steve Naganuma, Matt Pellico and Nathan Swoverland for all their hard work in making sure that Bensons’ “Tractor Float” was up and running for the parade.  Go Tech!! (And yes the second photo has a shot of Superintendent Carole Smith supporting Benson’s “Tractor Float.”

 

• Parents please note that this coming Thursday June 4^th Benson will be on its regular Tutorial schedule with Tutorial happening at the end of the day (2:33pm-3:15pm).

 

• Parents please note that the first day of school for the 2015-16 school year will be on Thursday August 27^th.  Please be sure to plan your summer vacations accordingly.

• Parents please remind your Seniors to purchase their GRAD NIGHT tickets during lunch in the center hall on Monday and Tuesday of this week.  The cost is $30.  Your Seniors must have a signed release/registration form with them at the time of purchase.

 

 

 

 

A Message Regarding Senior Graduation:

Hello parents and guardians.  As you may know, the long awaited senior graduation date is quickly approaching.  Commencement is on Monday, June 8th, 2015 at the Memorial Coliseum from 5:30pm-7:30pm and there will be a mandatory graduation practice for seniors which will be at the coliseum on that same day, from 12- 2pm.

Congratulations to Beth Burczak who won the PEMCO Community Volunteer Award.  She was recognized last week at the PPS Volunteer Recognition Event.  Beth is a community volunteer who developed the Beyond Benson Program.  Beyond Benson is a program that matches rising seniors with community volunteers to help seniors with their post high school plans.  Well Done Beth.

A Message from Benson’s Cathy Skach (Digital Media Instructor & SkillsUSA Advisor)

After winning the Oregon SkillsUSA State competition, three of Benson’s finest – Allison Plager, Andy Lai and Brian Moreno of Benson Polytechnic High School –  qualified to represent Oregon and compete at the SkillsUSA National Competition in Louisville, KY.

 

The SkillsUSA National Competition is huge. With 6,000 competitors nationwide. It’s a great learning experience, meeting people from all over the country and connecting with them. Unfortunately, the expense is high. Your funds will help pay for plane tickets, baggage fees, hotel, ground transportation and more. It’s estimated to cost each student plus their advisor nearly $1,000.

 

These future leaders are doing their part in fundraising selling Root Beer Floats, holding a bake sale and selling print items through our very own Tech Algebra program.  Let’s help these kids out! Like everyone says, every little bit helps.

A Message from Benson’s Counselors Regarding Summer School

Summer School Pre-Registration starts on Monday, May. 18th.  Summer Scholars is an opportunity for students to retrieve credit for a failed class. The first session is June 29th – July 17th and the second session is July 27-August 14th.  Students take one class per session.

The first step is meeting with your counselor for pre-registration.   Students will then need to come to one of the in-person registrations to complete the process and be fully registered.  The registration dates are: June 9, 10th, 11th  from  4:30pm – 7:00pm and June 15th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Please contact your counselor for more information.

Student body elections are starting.  Monday May 4^th starts campaign week and students are very excited to be running for 2015-2016 Student Body Government.  Voting will happen the week of May 26th-29th.  We will announce 2015-2016 new Benson High Student Body (BHSB) on Monday June 1st.

The District’s 60 Day Rule Regarding Seniors.  Please be sure to read carefully.

For the remainder of the school year it is important for seniors to stay focused on doing the right thing in order to participate in graduation activities. According to Board Policy “…Seniors shall be disqualified from participation in commencement exercises and related activities if within 60 consecutive calendar days of the last senior school day they are found to be in violation of District Alcohol or Drug policy or any violation resulting in three or more days of suspension or more serious disciplinary action…”. This 60 day period begins Friday, April 3rd, 2015.

 

 

 

 

A Message from Christin Chambless (Benson’s PTSA President)

Dear Benson High School senior parents and students,

Benson High School PTSA is planning on hosting its Graduation Party on June 8, 2015 and we need more chaperones to help supervise the event.  The PTSA is sponsoring a “Safe and Sober Grad Night Party” for the 183 students in the Graduating Class of 2015. This traditional all night event provides a safe and sober environment where the students can celebrate on graduation night. The prevention of alcohol and drug related tragedies on this special night benefit the entire community as a whole.

 

This event has not occurred in the past couple years but we are determined to bring this tradition back to Benson High School.  Our plan is to pick up the graduates and bus them to the event at 10pm on June 8th and return them to Benson around 6am June 9th.  The students will be provided with food, drinks and entertainment all evening.

A Message from Steve Curley (Testing Coordinator) Regarding Smarter Balanced Testing

 

“Starting in May, Benson will be testing all 11th graders using the new Smarter Balanced Assessment.  We will give 11th graders an opportunity to practice prior to testing in order to get used to the new interface.  The Smarter Balanced is replacing the OAKS tests that we have all become accustomed to.

Food Works is a youth run organization in North Portland that runs a 2 acre organic farm on Sauvé Island, manages a business, works in the community, and builds personal leadership skills! This is a VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP Program. Participants can earn school credit for community service and work experience. The Summer Crew will also receive a $300 Stipend upon completion of each month of the program ($150 every two weeks). Applications are due June 23rd. Beat the Odds Scholarship

The Beat the Odds scholarship is for students who will graduate in 2016, which means that eligible students are current juniors.  The winners will be seniors when the award is given in November of this year.  The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Monday, September 14th – which may be just a few weeks into the upcoming school year.  This $10,000 scholarship is available for students who have made academic success despite hardships within their lifetime.  The attached flyer has more information regarding this scholarship.

A Message from Benson’s Math teacher Lorene Espineli regarding The Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (Please also see attached pictures)

On May 15, 2015, 11 Benson students attended the 23rd annual Asian American Youth Leadership Conference (AAYLC).  AAYLC’s mission is to help Asian American youth rise above the obstacles before them and achieve their potential by promoting education, instilling self-confidence, and developing leadership skills. Students spent the rest of the day in workshops with a focus on leadership development, communication skills, and cultural identity. The following students that attended the conference were Angel Le, Benson’s Student Ambassador, Anthony Hoang, Kim Le, Anthony Nguyen, Baonhi Nguyen, Lisa Lau, Moses Tran, Benson Ton, Paul Chu, Yvette Louie, and Tony Le. Ms. Espineli and Mr. Trinh served as the group’s chaperones and they look forward to bringing more students from Benson to AAYLC in 2016.

 

A Message for our Manufacturing Teacher Barth Clooten

Benson students from Electric and Manufacturing apply for Youth Apprenticeship Positions. The industry partners work with the Electric and Manufacturing Programs of Study at Benson. The industry partners that were offering 3 apprenticeships are Precision Cast Parts and Tice Industries.  After the interviews were completed the following students were selected for apprentice positions:

The Boeing 3 year Youth Apprenticeship program finished interviews from the tri-county area.

Logan Richter earned a position after 100+ applicants and 30 interview candidates.

 

Thomas Wallberg earned 1st place in the annual American Foundry Society Competition.

•     Benson’s Diversity Assembly: The Diversity Assembly will be held on Thursday, May 7th in the Auditorium from 2:30-3:15.  Please be sure to come and check out some of our diverse acts performed by our very own BHS students.

Young, Gifted and Black Awards Ceremony

Congratulations goes out to Alexis Whitney and Dreyme Jackson who will be recognized as one of the 24 students being honored at the Sixth Annual Young, Black & Gifted ceremony on May 14^th from 5:30pm-8:00pm at the BESC.  Alexis and Dreyme were selected out of more than 180 student nominations from kindergarten through 12^th grade within PPS.

Young, Gifted and Black is a program aimed at highlighting the success of Black students throughout PPS, and this year we will be recognizing some of our most distinguished students and their families. Students will be photographed by a professional photographer, Marquis Johnson, and will be interviewed by a retired Portland Public Schools Administrator, Dr. Carolyn Leonard.

 

As part of the recognition program, parents, friends and community members, are invited to attend a ceremony at the central office of Portland Public Schools, located at 501 N. Dixon Street on Thursday, May 14 from 5:30 – 8:00pm.  The ceremony will include a full program including a keynote speaker, music, presentation of certificates, beverages and hors d’oeuvres.

A Message for PPS Chief Communications Director Jon Isaacs

I wish to invite you to take the Portland Public Schools 2025 survey through May 8.  We anticipate about 5,000 new students in our schools in the next 10 years, and we need your input as we prepare for this growth.

 

The Portland Public Schools 2025 survey is the second major survey we have done this year with Oregon’s Kitchen Table, (part of the National Policy Consensus Center at PSU). The first was our Successful School Survey.  It measured school climate.  Results from this survey, which we will begin sharing in May, will serve as one roadmap for school improvement.  Thanks for participating and helping to get the word out.

 

The Portland Public Schools 2025 survey asks for your views on big-picture topics that affect the entire district.  The questions center around values, boundaries, programming in the middle grades, and other topics.  It will help inform our districtwide boundary review process.

This survey is available not only to PPS staff, students and families but to all Portlanders.

The Counselors will be presenting information in classrooms and then follow up with individual meetings with students.  This is a time for students to choose classes and review academic progress with their counselor.  Students will be given forecasting materials to bring home and review with their guardian. Dear Benson High School senior parents and students,

Benson High School PTSA is planning on hosting its Graduation Party on June 8, 2015 and we need more chaperones to help supervise the event.  The PTSA is sponsoring a “Safe and Sober Grad Night Party” for the 183 students in the Graduating Class of 2015. This traditional all night event provides a safe and sober environment where the students can celebrate on graduation night. The prevention of alcohol and drug related tragedies on this special night benefit the entire community as a whole.

 

This event has not occurred in the past couple years but we are determined to bring this tradition back to Benson High School.  Our plan is to pick up the graduates and bus them to the event at 10pm on June 8th and return them to Benson around 6am June 9th.  The students will be provided with food, drinks and entertainment all evening.

Please read below and read the attached letter from Administration regarding ACT Testing.

Attention Juniors: Juniors will all be taking the ACT test on Tuesday morning, April 28th. Unlike years past, the test will not be held at Benson.  Instead, we have rented the Ambridge Event Center (1333 Northeast Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, Portland, OR 97232). This is being done to provide students with a quiet, uninterrupted environment in which to take the test.

Please remember, doing well on the ACT can help students get into the college of their choice and help students meet the essential skills requirement for graduation.  For more information about preparing for the ACT visit the ACT web site: http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/

 

The District’s 60 Day Rule regarding Seniors.  Please be sure to read carefully.

For the remainder of the school year it is important for seniors to stay focused on doing the right thing in order to participate in graduation activities. According to Board Policy “…Seniors shall be disqualified from participation in commencement exercises and related activities if within 60 consecutive calendar days of the last senior school day they are found to be in violation of District Alcohol or Drug policy or any violation resulting in three or more days of suspension or more serious disciplinary action…”. This 60 day period begins Friday, April 3rd, 2015.

A Message from The Benson Automotive Team of Ed Railey and Brett Anderson

Two of Benson’s Auto majors Fox Power and Bowen Rowe have tested and scored high enough to qualify Benson Tech as a competing team in the Ford/AAA Auto skills State hands on final.  These students will be competing against 9 other High Schools from the state of Oregon.  They will have to diagnose and properly repair a 2015 Focus SE in a 90 minute competition.  The outcome, win or lose usually results in long term employment opportunities for the competing students.  The hands-on competition will be held at MHCC in early May.

Seniors in Digital Media -Video Production submitted entries to the 2015 O[yes] “Speak up. Work Safe.” high school video contest. Three entries from Benson have been selected as finalists! The students’ videos will now enter a second phase of judging where they will select the first, second, and third place prize winners. O[yes] hosts the contest, which is sponsored by Oregon OSHA, SAIF Corporation, local Oregon chapters of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences at OHSU, Hoffman Construction, Central Oregon Safety & Health Association, the SHARP Alliance, the Construction Safety Summit, Northern Lights Theater, and SafeBuild Alliance.

The contest, open to all high school students in Oregon, also features the tagline “Work shouldn’t cost you your future.” Students were tasked with creating a 90-second video based on the concept of speaking up about hazards at work. The videos were judged on creativity, originality, youth appeal, production quality, and message.

Contest winners will be unveiled at a screening event at Northern Lights Theatre in Salem on May 2nd.

We are trying to limit the cost to families by fundraising.  We have partnered with Local Farmer’s Direct, who has offered to donate $25 for every household that tries their delivery service of fresh local products.  So far we have raised $550.  The cost to put on this event would require us to charge the students $50-$60 per student.  If we are successful in our fundraising attempts the cost to seniors will be reduced to $25-$30 per student.  We are hoping to get 100 Benson families to support our fundraiser.

Attendance/Tardy Policy

One of the main reasons students struggle in school is poor attendance.  Please help ensure students attend every day and arrive to school on time.  We have an automated phone system that calls parents when a student is marked absent from a class.  You may also receive a call from teachers and/or administrators when a student is not attending classes on a regular basis or has an inordinate amount of tardies.

Benson has implemented a new tardy policy that started Monday September 8th in that if a student is late to class then he/she will need to go to the main office to get an admittance slip in order to get into class.  Our goal is to get students focused on arriving to school and to class in a timely fashion so that classroom instruction can be maximize to its fullest potential and this can only happen if students are arriving to school on a daily basis and are also arriving to their classes on time.

Scholarships:

 

•             EXXon Mobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarship 5,000 due April 8th

•             Oregon State Elks Association Vocational Grant for any student pursuing a vocational/technical program.  Application is due April 1st.

 

Programs:

• The Eagle Program is a unique internship for Sophomore students working on the golf course.  You do not need to know anything about golf to apply.  Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to compete for the Evans Foundation Scholarship their Senior year. Applications are due April 10th.

 

Pre-College Programs:

Reed College: The Young Scholars Program allows selected high school senior to enroll in one Reed undergraduate class for the academic year.  Juniors should apply by April 1st.

A Word From Your Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Ferrell-Burns: Oregon Battle of the Books

As your Benson HS Librarian I am excited to be able to share with you that we have been awarded a grant from the Oregon Association of School Libraries towards funding of the Benson Library Battle of the Books Club.  This will be the first year that Benson Tech has participated in this reading program and the opportunity to compete with other high schools throughout the state.  Students who have a passion for reading meet others and share their love of literature.  We form teams of 4-5 players, read from a list of 12 books and then participate in a fun competition with other teams of students.  Our club meets on Thursdays during Lunch or Tutorial.  Students are invited to join the club with a registration form from the Library.

Dress Code Reminder

Parents please me mindful and remind your students that as the late summer/early fall weather is still warm outside that clothing with inappropriate symbols or signs relating to gangs, drugs, tobacco, alcohol or anything else is not acceptable.  No sunglasses, du-rags, hats, bandanas, sagging pants, halter tops, exposed midriffs, low necklines, spaghetti straps, or holes and tears in clothing.  No bare feet, spike jewelry, hanging belts and chains.  Dresses and skirts, with arms at your side; need to be at the end of your fingertips in length.  Skorts and shorts need to have a 4 inch inseam.

 

 

Benson Robotics Club

Parents, is your child interested in building robots?  Benson has been home to a robotics club for almost 9 years!  Please have your kids come to room E-127 after school on Fridays and build robots with the robotics club!

Oregon Jaycee Foundation Scholarship Program: 

This foundation will award at least two $ 500 scholarships to a graduating Oregon high school senior in the

Class of 2015. The amount of the scholarship is a one-time grant. The final selection of a recipient will

be based on the following criteria: leadership qualities, personal accomplishments and community service.

 

The scholarship application form is attached to this email.

 

The application deadline is April 30, 2015.
