Each year, teams of teachers, counselors and administrators at all our PPS high schools embrace the chance to promote their Latino students who exemplify:

-Contribution to family, community and school

-Creative accomplishment

-Academic achievement

-Commitment to growth after high school

This year we are pleased to add 8th graders to our list of honored students.  All 18 honored students will receive special recognition, a professional photo portrait and will be highlighted in a special commercial to be aired on KUNP/Univision and PPS Channel 28.

The May 20 celebration for our students and their families will feature music, children’s activities and food.  Honorees will be asked to invite a teacher, administrator or member of the community who has made a difference in their lives to share in the festivities.

A Message from David Champion (Norse Hall/Benson Supporter)

As most of you know, we are having our annual Syttende Mai (May 17th) celebration at Norse Hall on Saturday, May 17th, 2014, highlighted by a parade, starting in front of Norse Hall, 111 NE 11th Avenue, at 3:00 p.m.  It will first head north on NE 11th Avenue, right on NE Davis, then left on 12th Avenue to Lloyd Center, wrap around Holladay Park, and then return to Norse Hall, altogether around 1.5 miles.  Since 2006, Benson has participated in the May 17th parade, usually the groups we support.  Last year, the Benson Robotics Club, SkillsUSA, and cheerleaders walked in the parade, and, in the past, the Benson PTSA carried its banner in the parade.  Last year, the parade included a band, school groups, two Viking ships, a police escort and over 450 people.  It was also covered by KATU.

This year, we expect more people and more local media coverage, partly because this year, May 17th falls on a Saturday and partly because it will be a bicentennial celebration (May 17th is Norway’s Constitution Day-the constitution was ratified on May 17th, 1814).  We’re inviting all members of the Benson community to participate in this year’s parade, in short making the parade a sea of blue-and-orange.  So, the more people from Benson wearing Benson shirts along with more banners, the better.

Update:

Benson was well-represented at the May 17th parade, starting at Norse Hall on Saturday, May 17th, 2014.  The cheerleaders did a very good of providing school spirit and the Benson Robotics displays were very popular with the young kids.  Mr. Pellico fired up a tractor and trailer, which after decorated with orange and blue streamers made for the perfect Benson float.

The Benson Robotics Club did a very good job of entertaining the kids with their robots.  Two elementary school kids, one who goes to Irvington and the other to Buckman, said they wanted to go to Benson when they got older so they could join the robotics club!  Three of the cheerleaders, Crystal, Jacob and Arianna, also helped serve in the dining room.  Several people present commented that they were all very helpful, polite and friendly, so they represented very well, indeed.  Mr. Pellico’s idea of bringing a tractor and trailer, which the kids decorated, thereby making a Benson float, worked very well!

Several people cheered when the Benson float passed.

Thanks,

David

Jefferson Cluster Feeder PTAs Community Roundtable!

Tuesday, May 13 6:30pm – 8:00pm

Jefferson high School Cafeteria

5210 N. Kerby

There will be a community roundtable to talk about the upcoming district-wide boundary review.  Each feeder school will have the opportunity to share successes and challenges, especially as they relate to enrollment, boundaries, and transfers. Since Benson doesn’t have any feeder cluster, but is a part of the District, this could be a great opportunity to gain knowledge about the upcoming boundary review.  PPS officials, including Superintendent Carole Smith, will be there to listen and gather feedback.  At the end of the agenda, there will be a brief Q & A, if there are questions for PPS.

Childcare and snacks provided by PPS!

A Message from Matt Pellico (Benson Science & Robotics Club)

On Saturday May 3rd, Five Benson students competed in the 2014 Portland State University Innovation Challenge.  The theme of this year’s challenge was “Technology for the Older Generations”.

The student team of Bronson Kim, Rose Adrian, Theo Nguyen, Devon Straub, and Chris Halverson met at least one day each week for the last 4 months inventing a technology and preparing a presentation.  Portland State University matched them up with three outstanding graduate student mentors.  They researched, and then invented a theoretical medical computer they termed the “Medi-box”.  The Medi-box collects and records health data wirelessly from a variety of non-invasive user friendly sensors.  A sensor could be a wrist watch you wear that constantly measures your pulse over the course of a day.  Or it could be pillow that tracks your sleep patterns and temperature.  The sensors themselves would be open source, to encourage research and development of many new sensors.  Information from the Medi-box would be up-loaded directly to a physician, and any critical information would receive a higher priority.  For the presentation they put together a poster display, a PowerPoint program, and a 3-D model of the Medi-box.

The five students presented their results to an elite panel of judges for over 10 minutes.  Then they fielded audience questions for another 15 minutes.  Clearly Benson’s presentation was among the best of the eight schools competing.  In the awards ceremony Benson earned the “Best Team Venture” award and its accompanying banner.  The judges later revealed that the Benson team was second in several other categories and came close to earning multiple awards.  Additionally each of the five students earned a $1,000 scholarship to PSU, should they choose to attend.

Congratulations to Bronson, Rose, Theo, Devon and Chris

A Message From Principal Wilson; Parents/Guardians,

Extension of the School Year:

Parents/Guardians please note that the Portland School Board approved calendars for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 school years on March 31 and added two days to the current school year to make up for snow days. School will end this year on Friday, June 13.  PPS closed all schools three full days this school year due to inclement weather: Dec. 11, Feb. 7 and Feb. 10.  To make up the missed class time, June 12 and 13, originally scheduled as teacher planning days, will now be full school days.  School will let out for summer break Friday, June 13 and planning days will move to Monday and Tuesday, June 16 and 17 for teachers.

Dress Code Reminder

Parents remind your students that as we move into warm weather that clothing with inappropriate symbols or signs relating to gangs, drugs, tobacco, alcohol or anything else is not acceptable as regard to PPS policy.  No sunglasses, du-rags, hats, bandanas, sagging pants, halter tops, exposed midriffs, low necklines, spaghetti straps.  No bare feet, spike jewelry, hanging belts and chains.

Thank You!!

A Message from Barry Philips (Vice Principal)—Parents We Need Volunteers!!

Hello Parents and Guardians of Benson Students,

The Freshman class  is going on a fieldtrip to OMSI on Wednesday April 23rd 2014 for the ACT Testing Day Freshman Activities 8:00am – 12:30pm.

OMSI requires a 1:10 staff/volunteer to student ratio in order to attend.  Benson needs 10 parent volunteers to be able to take the freshman to OMSI.  If you are available to volunteer 04/23/14 from 8am-12:30pm please call or email Mr. Phillips ASAP at 503-916-5100, extension 77104 or email bphillips @pps.net    **Because you will not be left alone with students you do not require a security clearance for this event.

The Freshman Activity is a trip to OMSI. Two attractions (there are others) our students will focus on and enjoy are Tony Hawk Rad Science and What I Eat (see descriptions below).

Extreme Sports. Extreme Science.

In this cool new exhibit, world-renowned skateboard legend Tony Hawk demonstrates how physics principles like gravity, force, velocity, acceleration, inertia and balance make radical tricks possible in sports like skateboarding, BMX and snowboarding (teacher packet coming soon). In addition to his impressive athletic achievements, Hawk’s name is synonymous with top selling boarding products, mainstream clothing, video games and impressive charitable activities including the development of public skate parks in low-income communities. He understands how physics make his sport possible and makes these challenging science concepts relevant, accessible and engaging for young visitors.

What I Eat

Ever wondered what a boy in Bangladesh eats for lunch? How about a sumo wrestler in Japan or a camel herder in Egypt?

Based on Faith D’Aluisio and Peter Menzel’s wildly popular book, What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets, OMSI’s new photography exhibit invites you to explore what the food we eat says about how we live and who we are (teacher packet attached).

The exhibit features portraits of 20 people from around the world and the food they eat in the course of a day – right down to serving size and caloric value. Ranging from 800 to 8400 calories, fresh ingredients to processed staples, rich and hearty to lean and light, the differences in a single day’s worth of food provide a glimpse into the way people (live and eat) all over the globe.

Vice Principal

A Message from Dave DeMaris (Math Teacher)

This past week Chris Fischborn of Z-Tech Engineering, a Professional Surveyor working with a Program called TrigStar visited with Advanced Algebra, and Pre-Calculus students.  He introduced the students to surveying as a career.  He included a brief history of surveying in the US and on the football field and he also demonstrated how Mathematics is used every day…particularly trigonometry.  At the conclusion of his visit a test was given where prizes of $50, $30, and $20 was awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place on the test finishers.

Winners of the contest were:  1. Harry Herzberg  2. Rose Adrian   3. Zachary Schroeder

Harry will go on to represent Benson in a regional competition in May.

Congratulations to these students and thanks to Mr. Fischborn for visiting Benson Tech.

A Message from Sally Niedermeyer (Health Occupations Teacher)

Health Occupations had 18 Health Science students who competed at the Oregon HOSA Spring Leadership Conference this past week.  Sophomore, Evangeline Matley, was elected as president elect and will be a HOSA state officer for the next two years.  Eighty-eight percent (88%) of Benson students attending placed in the top 3 of their events and earned medals!  Benson Tech had a new school record with senior, Phuong Uyen Nguyen, receiving 11 medals.  Also senior Kien Tran was the top scorer in the Kaiser Permanente Health Care Issues Exam, a particularly difficult written test on current health issues.  Many of the students qualified to attend the National Leadership Conference in June to be held in Orlando, Florida.  Congratulations students and Go Tech!!

A Message from Matt Pellico and John DeLacy from the Robotics Club:  Trip to West Super-Regional FTC Championship in Sacramento Calif.

At the Oregon FTC State Robotics Championship, which was held at Benson High School on March 2, Benson High School Team 267, EMP, won a slot in the Western Super-Regional Championship in Sacramento, California.  From that moment, we held several fundraisers and made pleas for financial help from sponsors and alumni.  Overall we raised enough money to send eight students and two adults to Sacramento for four days.  The five Benson students who participated as Team 267 are Gavin Beck, Mitchell Angulo, Trevor McClung, Harry Herzberg and Zachary Schroeder.

Furthermore, three students from the other Benson teams signed up as volunteers at the tournament, so they went with us.  They were Rose Adrian, Bronson Kim and Keala Cottrell.  They helped with the Audio/Visual work during the three days of the tournament.  On Wednesday morning, March 19, we left Benson and arrived in Sacramento about 9PM.

Thursday, the first day of the tournament, was spent setting up and decorating our pit area and getting our robot inspected.  Team and pit judging also took place on Thursday.  Three practice fields were available for the team to perfect their programs and practice driving.

Friday morning was the start of the qualifying matches.  Team 267 took part in seven matches on Thursday.  We were in the winning alliance on two of them.  The robot had some mechanical and software problems that affected a couple of the losing matches, but we also had the bad luck to have one match in which the Field Control System failed completely to connect to our robot.  And in another match, the alliance partner’s robot failed to operate.

On Saturday morning, Team 267 had their eighth and last qualifying match.  We were allied with E = MC Squirred, an old friend from Beaverton, and our alliance won handily.  It was a very good end to the qualifying portion of the tournament.

Unfortunately, Team 267 did not get on an alliance for the final rounds, but the students felt very good at the way their robot operated and the team conducted itself amid some real difficulties.  Since this robotics program is designed to expose students to the real world of engineering, where unpredictable and negative things can happen, I feel the Benson students came through very well.  They were not discouraged and came away with unforgettable experiences and ideas, and some new friends.

Every student had a lot of fun, made many new friends and learned invaluable lessons in life and engineering.

We stayed on for the final rounds and awards ceremonies and rooted for the four or five Oregon teams who made it into the finals.

We returned to Benson on Sunday, exhausted but happy.

John DeLacy

A Message from Christin Chambless (PTSA President)

Parents/Guardians

I just wanted to put out a reminder that the Benson Clean up day is fast approaching.

It is on Saturday, April 19th from 9am-1pm.

We will be coordinating our efforts with those of the Kerns neighborhood society, Benson Alumni, PTSA and Site Council.

We are looking for parent and student volunteers for the day.

We need as many volunteers as we can get to help us weed, clean, prune and beautify the grounds of Benson.

We also need people to bring gardening supplies that they can use on that day.

Gloves, rakes, shovels, pruners, power washers, brooms, etc.

The Benson PTSA would like to “Thank” everyone for their help and cooperation in this manner.

Christin Knight Chambless

BHS PTSA President

A Message from Linda McLellan (PE Teacher; Fit 2 Live and Learn Class)

Freshmen Parents:  If you want to check on whether your child has completed daily homework, the list of homework (which they do have each night) assignments & expectations are listed in their daily planner.  Please ask to see that planner.  In that planner you will also find teacher’s email addresses and other resource information to help your child navigate their High School experience.

A Message from Joe Rozewski (Art Teacher)

Benson is proud to announce the offering of a new sculpture class for next fall.  The class is centered around ceramics technology and fine art skill building.  Students will enjoy the practice of pottery on the wheel, low and high fire clay techniques, hand building and plaster mold work. The course also touches on Art History and raw material chemistry in the field of ceramics.

We will also be offering an Intermediate/Advanced Art class for our more industrious young artists.  This class will be great for juniors and seniors, designed to build on skills learned in Benson’s introductory level art class.  Students will have the opportunity to enter competitions, show in galleries and hopefully sell some of their art on our Etsy account.  The philosophy of art making and art history component of this class enriches the experience.

Principal of Benson Polytechnic High School

A Message From Principal Wilson:

Parents/Guardians

I have good news to share.  Benson Tech will be having a full athletic schedule next school year 2014-15.  The district has informed me that all of Benson Football and Boys and Girls Soccer will not be cut for the next school year and that both sport programs will be added back to the fall schedule for this upcoming school year.  The district athletic director and the Benson community/stakeholders will now be able to fully discuss Benson Athletics in public forums in preparation for the 2015-16 school year.  I have added the email that Trip Goodall (Director of High Schools) sent to me explaining the Districts decision to reinstate fall sports.  (Please Read Below)

Marshall, Margaret, Curtis,

I wanted to resend this to all parties to make sure we are all on the same page. Based on my conversations with Jon, the superintendent and the Board expect that the sports be included in the schedule for next season.  Monday, there will be a Board presentation and this needs to be made clear to the Board as well as the process we will use moving forward to bring both school communities into the conversation.

Thanks all for helping to bring your athletic communities into the conversation.

-Trip Goodall

Now that we can be assured that the 2014-15 sports season is back in tact we’ll have to soon start having discussions with the district athletic director in regards to what athletics will look like at Benson for the 2015-16 school year.  But for now we can move forward with the 2014-15 sports season.

Great work to all the Benson Tech supporters.  Your efforts were definitely recognized!!

Also please note that the District Athletic Director will be speaking to the PPS School Board on Monday March 10th at 6pm in regards to Benson Athletics.

Parents/Guardians please remember that freshmen have a daily planner that will help parents monitor daily homework needs and due dates from teachers.  The daily planner also contains contact information and email addresses of their teachers.  Please also be aware of the automated phone calls from the school alerting you (parents) of absences/skipping by your child.  This will allow you the opportunity to follow up with your child before the absences become a chronic issue.

A Message From Sam Del Biaggio (Study Hall Coordinator)

Benson offers free credit recovery classes using a program called Virtual Scholars.  Students that have failed one or more classes and need to make up the credit should contact their counselor immediately.  The deadline to sign up for credit recovery is Friday, March 14th.  Virtual Scholars is a blend of online learning with regular contact with a teacher as well as a mentor at Benson.  Online learning is an excellent option for students who want to control their learning experience and get back on pace to graduate on time.

Benson Robotics Team (A plea for help/support)

The Benson Robotics Team 267 has won a spot at the FTC West Super-Regional Championship tournament in Sacramento, CA on March 20th- 22nd.  They need money for transportation, hotel and food for four days.  If you would like to donate, please make contact with Debbie Corning in the bookkeeper’s office ([email protected]) to see how you can help support the robotics team as they head off to the Super Regionals in California.  Thank you very much for your support.

Athletic Events For The Week

Congratulations to Robert Caudillo (Benson Wrestling)

One wrestler from Benson earned the right to be a state competitor, Robert Caudillo.  Robert won his first match 3-1, lost his second match and had a heart breaking overtime loss in his third.  Robert was 19-5 this year and will be returning to lead the Techmen next season, his senior year.  All state competitors are the best wrestlers in the state and we are proud to join those ranks.
