A Message From Principal Wilson:

Parents/Guardians

Friday was an awesome day here at Benson Polytechnic High School.  First of all I was thoroughly impressed by our first school assembly.  Between the student Leadership class, the Benson staff and our students the homecoming assembly was a smashing success.  Kudos to Rachel Draper and her Leadership class for doing a fantastic job with the assembly.

Also the Benson football team brought home the Homecoming victory on Friday night as the Techmen defeated Cleveland High 34-27 for their first victory of the season.  Congratulations to the coaches and the kids for a fantastic job on Friday night.

And finally I would like to give praise to all the students who made it to the Homecoming Dance Friday night here at Benson in the small gym.  Students were respectable and responsible during the dance and everyone had a great time at the dance.

Congrats to all involved in making the 2013 Benson Homecoming Day a resounding success!!

 School Meals

Students who were receiving free or reduced-price meal benefits at the end of last year must fill out a NEW meal application for the current school year in order to receive school meals or other fee reductions such as athletic fees or low cost internet.  Students who have NOT submitted a NEW application will be required to pay full price for school meals starting Monday, October 14th.  It is easy and confidential to apply online for free and reduced-price meals.  You will find the link to the online application on our school web site.

Breakfast

All students can get breakfast free of charge.  Breakfast will be served from 7:45-8:15.  Please encourage your students to arrive to school on time in order to receive breakfast.

Attendance

One of the main reasons students struggle in school is poor attendance.  Please help ensure students attend every day and arrive to school on time.  We have an automated phone system that calls parents when a student has missed a class.  You may also receive a call from teachers and/or administrators when a student is not attending regularly.

The Courtyard

Parents/Guardians if you get a chance please be sure and stop by the courtyard which is located near the Vice Principal’s office.  Our very own Social Studies teacher Mr. Ryan has been working long and hard to help beautify the area.  Mr. Ryan along with other student and staff volunteers have laid barkdust, picked up trash from the area and have painted the walls along courtyard to give the place an appealing and inviting look.  The work is almost completed and we look forward to utilizing the space once the job is done.

Scholarships

Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship & Gates Scholarship Information Sessions will be held on Oct. 14th at 1:45pm in the Career Center.

PSAT

Any juniors wanting to re-take the PSAT on October 16th are encouraged to do so. This is a great opportunity to meet state benchmarks and prep for the SAT.  If you are interested in taking the test or have a question about it, contact Mr. Curley in room 221.  The cost is $14.00, payable to the bookkeeper.

A note from Ms. Amy Barras:

I can’t believe we have entered into our fourth year of HealthCorps being at Benson High School. We have endured so much together and have made tremendous strides towards creating a healthier school environment for students to learn and staff to work. It has been quite a journey! We have focused on collaboration to build success, innovation, learning from every opportunity, and of course celebrating to keep our spirits high.

You may have heard that my role has changed quite a bit this year and it’s because Benson rocks and we have conquered so much in so little time. Last year, I worked very closely with Katie Meyer, Linda McLellan and Monty Catabay to “amp up” the new Health/PE program called Fit2Live&Learn. This year, I will be focusing on creating a health and wellness sustainability plan for the entire school, connecting more with resources in our community, and also entertaining special projects that will come along the way.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Email is the best way to get in touch with me. When I am in the building, you may find me in the office located in room G209 or out and about with my ipad. Never forget that you are in the driver’s seat, you are leading the way, and creating big change begins with each and every one of you. Cheers to another fabulous year ahead!

Sincerely,

Amy Barras (aka Ms. Amy)
