Staff Newsletter

Hi Everyone,

Hard to believe it is already December.  There is only two weeks remaining before the winter break.  I hope you will be able to help students devise a plan to make up missing work, meet proficiencies and raise failing grades.  With the loss of “Upgrade” it is even more important for teachers, counselors, students and parents to work together in assisting students.

We will have some first quarter grade data ready for department meetings and the equity  meeting this month.

Have a good week,

Carol

Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering

Saturday Academy’s Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) program matches high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors with scientists and engineers for 8-week summer internships in a professional scientific or engineering environment.  Most of the interns are awarded school credit for their work and an $1,000 stipend for the summer.

Each year, Benson conducts a process in order to identify and assess students for the TAG program.  The first step in the TAG identification process is for parents or teachers to complete an Identification Process Form (IDPF) and submit the form to Vice Principal Jeandré Carbone.  Forms are available in the Vice Principal’s office, or can be sent electronically by e-mailing Jeandré Carbone at [email protected]. .  The deadline for submitting the IDPF is Monday, November 26th, 2012.

Talented and Gifted Identification Process

Portland Public Schools is dedicated to identifying and providing for the unique academic and social emotional needs of Talented and Gifted (TAG) students across the district. Our goal is to provide educational opportunities to students of all racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups, to provide informational training to educators, and to provide consistent challenge for all students.

Each year, Benson conducts a process in order to identify and assess students for the TAG program.  The first step in the TAG identification process is for parents or teachers to complete an Identification Process Form (IDPF) and submit the form to Vice Principal Jeandré Carbone.  Forms are available in the Vice Principal’s office, or can be sent electronically by e-mailing Jeandré Carbone at [email protected]. .  The deadline for submitting the IDPF is Monday, November 25th, 2012.

If you have any questions about the TAG identification form or process you may email Ms. Carbone or discuss the TAG program at parent conferences on November 19th and 20th.  IDPF forms will be available at parent conferences.

Breakfast

All students can get breakfast free of charge.  Breakfast is served from 7:45-8:30.  Those students who have late arrival can get breakfast in the cafeteria from 9:30-9:45.

Free and reduced lunch applications have to be filled out every year.   The forms are available in the main office.

Letter from the Principal:

Hello Benson Community:

The homecoming game and dance was a success.  The weather held out and we had a mostly clear night for the game.  Thanks to all those who helped including teachers, staff, alumni, parents, boosters and friends of Benson.  I hope we can continue the tradition and host more games on Buckman Field in the future.

A special thanks to Rachel Draper, Athletic Director for her hard work in the weeks preceding the game to secure equipment such as the scoreboard, flags and PA system.

Thank you to Kevin Flink for announcing and Kevin and Steve Naganuma for broadcasting the game on KBPS with Benson graduates giving the Play-by-play.  Thanks to Cathy Skach, Communications teacher for videotaping the game.  We hope to continue to have video and broadcasts available for other athletic events.

There is a group of parents who are starting a booster club and they ran the concession stand and helped with clean-up.

The PTA provided gate workers and alumni helped with sideline supervision.

SEI supported students by providing food and hot chocolate.

Troy Berry, Men’s basketball coach secured the donation from Buffalo Wild Wings with proceeds going to the men’s basketball program.

Also, thank you to Anthony Stoudamire, his coaching staff and football players for helping set up for the game and make sure the field was restored after the game.

As you can see, it takes a lot of people to host an event like this and we greatly appreciate all those who helped with planning, organizing and running the first varsity football game on Buckman Field.

Five Year Plan

Overview-Lisa and Dale

Lisa did some research on five-year plans.  She found some private schools that used the plan for building a foundation.  The plan could be linked to our school improvement plan and include things like graduation rate and student achievement. Lisa provided a template for us to begin our work.  The template includes SIP goals and other goals.

We have many talented students who would be capable of making plaques or other items to recognize partners.

Dale shared his thoughts on developing a 5 year plan.  Who is our audience?  Why do we need this plan?  Planning should be exciting and should push people to do the work.  Usually plans are developed and then filed away.  We want to make a plan that is useful and constantly revisited.

Benson needs to be a 21st Century School and ensure students experience relevant education that is up to industry standard.

Puanani will bring some information to the next meeting on a format for creating a five year plan.

All members will bring a draft of a mission statement to the next meeting.

Time line for completion of five-year plan:   Completed by January 1, 2013

Dale recommended one prominent goal should be that we improve our academic achievement.

Site Council Chair

Lisa nominated Dale Bajema as site council president.  He accepted the nomination and will assume chairperson duties in December.

NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday,  November  6th,  2012 in the Library Classroom.  Time:  4:00 p.m.

Freshmen Field Trip to OMSI-October 17

All freshmen will visit OMSI on the October 17th (PSAT testing day).  The focus will be on the exhibit called “Race:  Are we so Different?”

This is relevant to our school equity work and an opportunity to address the issue of race in science and social studies curriculum.  Since freshmen don’t have a social studies class parts of the curriculum can be implemented in 9th English classes as well as Biology.   Students will also visit the Rail Museum which is relevant to the history of Benson and the connection to school and career.

Students must turn in a permission slip to be able to attend these two events.

Here is general information about the exhibit:

Below is an article by Leonard Pitts, Jr.  highlighting the incredible courage of a 14 yr. old Pakistani girl lobbying for women’s access to education.

A Pakistani girl who joined the fight for truth The Oregonian

“Truth crushed to earth will rise again.”

— Martin Luther King Jr. (quoting William Cullen Bryant)

By Leonard Pitts Jr.

Sometimes, oceans are not enough.

Usually, the fact that we are barricaded on both sides by great bodies of water gives us in this country a certain sense of remove from the awful things people with funny names do to one another in strange places on the far side of the globe. But once in a while, the thing is awful enough that you can’t ignore it or pretend that it is less real.

Such is the case with Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year-old Pakistani girl whose shooting last week on a school bus in the Swat Valley sparked headlines and outrage here and around the world. Yousafzai, who at this writing is in critical condition after emergency surgery, has been an Internet activist, agitating for women’s access to education.

The Taliban considers that a capital crime. It claimed responsibility for the men who stopped the bus and boarded it, who asked for Malala by name and, when she was identified, shot her and fled. The group has said that if Malala survives, it will come for her again. It says her death is required under Islamic law.

But make no mistake: Islam is not their religion. It is their excuse.

There are two reasons this story crossed the ocean. The first is that it is appalling. Human garbage does not get much ranker than a man who boards a school bus to kill a child. The second is that it is recognizable, that we see in their mad religious and ideological fundamentalism ghostly shadows of our own.

Granted, the outspoken child in this country is not in particular danger of physical violence from religious or ideological zealots. But the abortion doctor is. The gay couple is. The Muslim American is.

Fundamentalism is fundamentalism wherever it breeds, always the same dark stain of unbending literalism, always the same shrill claim that it guards the one true path to enlightenment, always the same crazed insistence that the one unforgivable crime against faith, the one inexcusable heresy of ideology, is to ask questions.

But where there are no questions, there can be no true answers. And where there is not freedom, there cannot be real faith. How real can faith be if it is not a thing freely held, if it is something required, coerced, enforced?

This is something fundamentalists never understand. They think people can be intimidated or mandated into silence. They think people can be shot or bombed into obedience.

Perhaps, for a while, they can.

But the great man was right: Truth crushed to earth will rise again. And he was right, too, when, in the same speech, he quoted the abolitionist Theodore Parker: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Because there are not bullets enough in all the world to gun down the human will to be free.

So eventually and inevitably, there will always be someone who can neither bend, nor pretend, someone compelled by conscience — and yes, sometimes, faith — to stand and resist. There will always be a Mohamed Bouazizi immolating himself in Tunisia, a Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat in Alabama, a Paul Rusesabagina sheltering people from massacre in Rwanda, an Oskar Schindler hiding Jews from the Nazis in Poland, a nameless man standing before a tank in Tiananmen Square. And a Malala Yousafzai, age 14, defying the Taliban in Pakistan.

In taking their lonely stands, these people birth myths and memories that make us — and generations that come after us — braver than we actually are or would otherwise be. In a word, they inspire. So the irony here is almost poetic. The Taliban was so threatened by the words of a little girl that they tried to kill her.

And in so doing, they ensured that she will never die.

Leonard Pitts Jr. writes for The Miami Herald.

Hello Benson Community:

While we didn’t win the football game on Friday night, it was impressive to have a large number of students, parents and other supporters in the stands at Cleveland.  I am confident that we will eventually win games, however, the spirit and sportsmanship that have been exhibited by fans, players and coaches is commendable.  Thanks for your support.

Next week, teachers will submit first quarter (midterm) progress reports.  You also have access to EdBox which includes assignments, tests and current academic progress.  If you need help with EdBox, please call 503-916-5100.

Hello Benson Community:

Monday is an opportunity for students to get picture re-takes, student ID’s and bus passes.  Pictures will be taken in the auditorium during lunch.

One of the main reasons students struggle in school is poor attendance.  Please help ensure students attend every day.  We have an automated phone system that calls parents when a student has missed a class.  You may also receive a call from teachers and/or administrators when a student is not attending regularly.

You are invited to the PTSA meeting and the Booster Club meeting this week.  See details below.

Back-to-School Night

It was great to meet some of you at back-to-school night last Tuesday.  We tried a different format that was more like an open house instead of following the bell schedule. I would appreciate any feedback you have regarding the format.  Include any suggestions you have for next year’s back-to-school night.

[email protected]

Late Arrival and Early Release

You should check your student’s schedule and know whether or not it includes a late arrival or early dismissal.  Most students have at least one period in which they could choose one of these options as well as a tutorial (study hall), teacher assistant, office assistant, library assistant, peer mentor or career center mentor.  We do not allow freshmen or sophomores to have an open period in the middle of the day.  Juniors and seniors may have extended lunch if they are on track to graduate.   If a student has a late arrival we offer a late breakfast at 9:30.  We have a volunteer that monitors the cafeteria during the last period of the day for students who stay on campus for athletics or other after school activities.

Breakfast

All students can get breakfast free of charge.  Breakfast is served from 7:45-8:30.  Those students who have late arrival can get breakfast in the cafeteria from 9:30-9:45.

Last week during the Wednesday late start the staff read and discussed an article that explained the importance of getting to know students cultural backgrounds, pronouncing names correctly and providing a welcoming atmosphere in the classroom.

We will all be working this year on building a sense of community with our students and families.  Benson is a very diverse school and our families live throughout the city and region.  Many of our students speak two languages and it is important for us to recognize and respect the many different experiences, cultures, races and ethnicities that our families bring to Benson High School.

We discussed the format that was used last year and all agreed that the bell schedule was too hectic and parents who could not come at the beginning were unable to see some teachers.
We came up with a plan that includes a meeting for freshmen parents from 6-6:30 followed by an open house for all parents. Clubs and activities will have information in the cafeteria, edbox information will be in the library and the counseling and career center will be open. Teachers will be in their classrooms to hand out information and meet parents.
We will also include information about and opportunities to sign up for PTSA, Booster Club and Site Council
Time for meetings: We changed the time to 4:30 to accommodate parents last
