A Message From Principal Wilson:

Parents/Guardians,

This month, late openings for Benson will be on Wednesday, January 15th, and Thursday, January 16th, due to final exams occurring the following week.

This Thursday January 16th late opening will be our monthly advisory period from 8:15 to 10:00 AM.  Students needing extra help are invited to come in to get support from their teachers during this time.

 

Important Meeting Date:

Site Council will be meeting at 4pm in room 125 on Wednesday January 15th

PTSA will be meeting at 6pm in room 125 on Wednesday January 15th

Alumni will be meeting at 6pm in the Library Conference Room on Wednesday January 15th

 

Parents I will be having a “State of Benson” address on Wednesday January 15th at 5:30pm in room 125 (band room) to just inform parents on how Benson is doing at this point of the school year.  You are more than welcomed to come and hear this address and attend either the PTSA or Alumni meeting afterwards.  If you’re interested in attending the Site Council meeting please remember they will be meeting at 4pm on Wednesday January 15th in room 125.

Benson Tech Show:

The Benson Tech Show is coming February 13th and 14th from 6pm-9pm here at Benson.  Parents/Guardians this is the time to come by with your students to see what Benson truly has to offer within its CTE programs.  Parents and students will be able to visit all the CTE programs, talk with teachers in the academic and CTE setting and experience Benson’s hands on programs.  The freshmen class will also have activities happening  in the gym for all of our students and guests.  To catch a glimpse of last year’s Tech Show please be sure to visit the Benson website at www.bensonhs.net and click on the Tech Show 2013 icon.

Winter Formal 2014

Benson’s Winter Formal will be held on Saturday, February 1st at the DoubleTree Inn by the Lloyd Center.  This dance is FORMAL.  Please be sure to “Dress to Impress.” 

Winter Formal tickets will be on sale January 21st – 31st during lunch and afterschool in the bookkeeper’s office.  Prices:  $20 single, $35 couple.  Tickets are limited so by them now!

 

 

 

A message from the Benson Counseling Staff of Amy Henry and Steve Wren:

Parents here are a few things we want to make sure you don’t miss:

 

Evening Scholars: If your student needs to make up credit please have them see their counselor for more information about retrieving credit through the EVENING SCHOLARS program located at Benson.  The last day to get the paperwork from your counselor is Feb. 4th 2014. 

 

Math Tutoring: The counseling center is now offering FREE math tutoring on Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm for students in Algebra 1 – Pre-Calculus.  Feel free to drop in any Thursday and get help with math in the counseling center!

Upcoming Events:

The PPS Focus on Diversity Film & Lecture Series is hosting a special exhibit Jan. 16 at Jefferson High School.

The Black History 101 Mobile Museum is a traveling exhibit that explores history through memorabilia that spans from slavery to Hip Hop. The innovative exhibit features 5,000 artifacts, including documents from Black leaders who helped shape the United States.

The exhibit will be open from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 16 for students and from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for families and community members at Jefferson, 5210 N. Kerby Ave. The exhibit will be temporarily housed at Jefferson High School.

Khalid el-Hakim, the founder of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, will provide context and discuss the exhibit.  Accompanying him will be Dr. Umar Johnson an nationally certified school psychologist who lectures throughout the country. Dr. Umar is a blood relative of abolitionist and orator Frederick Douglass.
